2016 Banshee Marine Layer Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast (1.5L Magnum)
16 months; 100% French oak, 25% new, 40% second use, 35% neutral
Native yeast fermentation in small open top vats with manual punchdowns 1-2 times per day
Marine Layer is one of our pride and joys from the vintage and the result of making some tough sacrifices from our single vineyard program. An absurd quality of vineyards like Barlow Lane, Thorn Ridge and Tina Marie are the major players and while we won’t see as much of those on a singular level, they each shine in this harmonious blend.
Hand harvested and hand sorted. Native yeast fermentation in small open top vats with manual punchdowns1-2 times per day, carefully trying to avoid over-extraction in this vintage. Aging in French oak for 16 months - 25% new, 40% second use, 35% neutral. Cavin, Taransaud, Rousseau, and Chassin barrels.
This vintage will likely go down as one of the best in the past decade for the Sonoma Coast. It was the fourth consecutive drought year that brought on extremely early bud-break and flowering, followed by a warm and dry summer resulting in profound depth. The wines are energetic, full of verve and well etched with precise and vivid flavors. Freshly cut rose petals greet the nose, followed up by vivid, concentrated raspberries. In the mouth a light-medium weighted body shows a purée of wild red berries, plum, and mint leading into a long, lip-smacking finish. This one is long on charm and will age well for more than a decade.
